The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
