Our Leading Album of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Spot.

On the surface, this album may look more like a challenging scholarly examination than the latest popular music project by a musician whose previous single featured an international pop star. Split into 4 different movements and voiced in 13 tongues, it is a dizzying symphonic opus investigating female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and physical transformation, often through the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with raw honesty elsewhere—is launched heavenward here, supported by the lush presence of a full orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity alone renders the work of contemporary artists seem quite small.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That this album manages to transcend overly intellectual posturing is almost a miracle, and full credit going to Rosalía. While it's not her first album to blend historical sounds with modern styles, the ambitions are far higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk more precarious. The element that really elevates her fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of fun. Similar to the legendary artist during her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. Even when she is breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during a stunning Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over several minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls away, and we hear a spontaneous giggle and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top string surge thuds in with cartoonish impact. The song then segues into the wild track driven by racing orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a cameo role from none other than Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in you never exactly know—or even wish to predict—what it will go next."

Almost every track concludes at a totally distinct place from where it started. A track explores the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused style starts out moody and brooding, with prowling beats, before fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth its jagged edges.

The Balance Of Art & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on the album is straddling the gap of radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is no surprise that it has become her highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a suite of truly catchy pop songs. One track performed entirely in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to gather increasingly nagging hooks while it spins upward. This trick gets echoed on a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, weaving layered melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for high Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of buried gems that takes time to fully explore but doesn't feels like a chore. Where some big pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet where the characters around the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most restlessly inventive visionary.
