British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages down to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
